Properties: Light tan to reddish brown in color, with no noticeable difference between heartwood and sapwood. Color darkens and reddens with age. A soft wood with a straight grain and fine texture. Can be found in both knotty and superior grades, though Superior Alder is likely to have an occasional small knot.
Workability: Due to its softness, Alder is very easy to work with both hand and power tools, though care should be taken not to tend or scuff it. It holds glue very well, and stains and finishes beautifully, and can be stained to emulate other species of wood, including Walnut and Cherry. It also is easy to turn and carve into specialty pieces.
Uses: Interior trim moulding, furniture, cabinets, musical instruments, veneer, and turned and carved objects.
Availability: Alder is common and easily found in widths up to 6 inches. Knotty Alder is economically-priced and often used as a utility wood, while Superior Alder is cabinet-grade and generally a higher-priced wood.
Fun Fact: Alder is a traditional and oft-recommended wood for smoking fish, especially salmon. It does not have the heavy smoke taste of hickory or other woods, and that keeps it from overwhelming the flavor of the salmon.
S4S boards are surfaced on four sides and ready to use.
