Common Name: Hard Maple, Sugar Maple, Rock Maple

Properties: Unlike many hardwood species, Hard Maple is mostly sapwood rather than heartwood. This sapwood is a clear light color, ranging from nearly white to a tan color that might have a red or yellow hue to it. The heartwood is a dark reddish brown. Usually a straight grain, though it can be wavy. It has a fine and even texture.
Workability: As the name might suggest, Hard Maple is quite dense, but it works well with both hand and power tools. It is easy to turn and polish, leaving a beautiful sheen. Glues and finishes well with a topcoat, though staining may be difficult due to a blotchy finish. Wood conditioner or gel stains may be necessary to get a consistent color.
Common Uses: Hard Maple is often used for butcher block cutting boards and countertops, as well as flooring, musical instruments, workbench tops, tool handles, and other specialty products.
Fun Fact: Hard maple is the tree where maple syrup comes from! Through a process called “tapping”, where small metal pipes are inserted into holes drilled in the tree as the sap is starting to rise at the end of winter. The sap runs through the pipes to be collected and boiled to evaporate off most of the water. This leaves behind the wonderfully sweet syrup we love, ready to be bottled and applied to mountains of pancakes.
